Hi, I’m Doug Smith.
What’s the one thing you need to know about copywriting? That it’s about identifying your goals, and then influencing your readers to follow them.
As a copywriter, my goal is all about you, the client. I started Look Here to help you speak better to your customers, visitors and clients, and to grow your turnover.
Words and writing have always been fundamental to me, from voracious book-reading to loving catchy slogans and headlines, well-phrased arguments and great dialogue. Stories, questions, wordplay… emails, reports, analyses… the list goes on. The world is a constant stream of communication.
Before copywriting, I spent 19 years in the music business negotiating, persuading and selling on behalf of artists on a daily basis. There was never a set formula to any campaign – every artist has their own career path according to their sound, their audience and their timing. This often meant having to be creative, flexible, innovative and practical in equal measure.
While constantly putting words together to win over people, I was also building networks and relationships, identifying strengths, planning strategies and honing my tenacity and persistence. Connecting with people and being determined are key in that, or any, industry.
I have been fortunate to work with people all over the UK and abroad, from all backgrounds and all levels of business, and welcome more of the same going forward. I can contribute positive ideas, bring experience to the table, talk to people confidently in meetings and on the phone, and write a killer email.
My other simple pleasures are strong tea, Italian coffee, taking my sons to places and catching up on films with my wife.

It’s about your business, your customers, your profile, your turnover.
You can’t blame others or leave important things to someone else. Knowing that the buck stops with you is both empowering and liberating. You’re accountable and responsible, and free to take action, ask questions and make changes. On a more profound note, if you don’t take control of your life then someone else will.
Good manners cost nothing. Treat people how you’d like to be treated yourself. We’re all humans with feelings and failings as well as talents and ambitions. Helping people out and appreciating what others do builds great relationships. Chances are, you’ll need someone’s help too someday.
Be honest and don’t assume anything
Life’s too short to hold back when an honest opinion is needed, or an issue needs to be brought up. You’ll save a lot of time and stress by catching problems early, pointing out issues and asking questions, rather than leaving it or making assumptions.
Much as I’d love to be the keeper of all human knowledge, I’ll admit that I’m an ordinary guy with issues and questions like everyone else. Happily, there are plenty of people who know more than me about all sorts of things, and I like to keep learning. The internet and your personal networks are a fantastic resource – use them!
