What do you need to know about copywriting? You didn’t get into your business to be a marketer, but I did. I help businesses and organisations by saving them time, making them look good and increasing their engagement and turnover.
To help clients grow their business by really engaging with people and standing out.
Why work with me?
You’ll want someone who will respond quickly. My aim is to connect with you and figure out the reasons and goals behind the job. I’ll work out your needs, offer advice and tips, and provide you with effective content that brings positive change to your business.
Good copywriting can get you noticed. It will increase traffic to your website, improve awareness and make people do what you need them to: reach for their wallet, sign up for a mailing list, ask for a sample, order an e-book, make a donation, or spread the word by sharing your message.
I can offer help with:
- website copy: home, about, services and sales pages
- blog posts
- optimising text for search engines and user experience
- newsletters & sales letters
- press releases
Does it work?
There are numerous examples where good copy and content has improved an organisation’s customer base and turnover. A national magazine increased its subscription response by 111% from a single mailing, an international company’s internal newsletter readership jumped through the roof, and a local cleaning company wiped the floor with the competition. It works.
Words and writing have always been fundamental to me, from voracious book-reading to noticing newspaper headlines, advertising tag lines, catchy slogans, a well-phrased argument and great dialogue in TV and comics. Stories, questions, puns, rhymes, wordplay and then emails, reports, analyses… the list goes on. The world is a constant stream of communication.
I’m Douglas Smith. Over the years, I’ve lived in Reading, Bristol, London and most recently Essex. I was lucky to meet my wife twenty-three years ago, and we have two great boys. Life continues to change and grow. I have been blessed to work with people all over the UK and abroad, from all backgrounds and all levels of business, and welcome more of the same going forward.
But enough about me…
It always comes back to your story. What makes you special?
What can your service or product really do for people? Why did you create it and why does your audience need it?
We could be talking about a property investment or a charitable cause, an artist or a household item. You aren’t just buying a new headlight bulb, you’re regaining the freedom to get back on the road and go places.
Similarly, you aren’t just buying new text for your website, brochure or mailout. You’re getting consultancy advice, more people wanting what you have to offer, a broader market and an expanding company.
You can’t blame others or leave important things to someone else. Knowing that the buck stops with you is empowering and liberating – it’s great to feel accountable and responsible, and you’re free to take action, ask questions and make changes. On a more profound note, if you don’t take control of your life then someone else will.
Good manners cost nothing. Treat people how you’d like to be treated yourself. We’re all humans with feelings and failings as well as talents and ambitions. Helping people out and appreciating what others do builds great relationships. Chances are, you’ll need someone’s help too someday.
Be honest and don’t assume anything
Life’s too short to hold back when an honest opinion is needed, or there’s an issue that needs to be brought up. You’ll save so much time and stress by catching things early, pointing something out and asking questions about anything uncertain, rather than leaving it or making assumptions.
Much as I’d love to be the repository of all knowledge available to humankind, I’ll admit that I’m an ordinary guy with issues and questions like everyone else. Happily, there are plenty of people out there smarter than me and more expert on an immeasurable amount of things. The internet and your personal networks are a fantastic resource – use them!
I enjoy being thorough, creative, rigorous and accountable. I don’t want to get caught out, and I won’t want you to either! I’ll respond quickly, listen and learn about you and your project, and then produce exactly what you need, when you need it.
